<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Does your cat seem to want to go outside, but you don’t want them to be free roaming? A catio is a great compromise!</image:title>
<image:caption>Jake is FASCINATED by the birds, so I decided to make him a catio. I have some raccoon neighbours I had to take into consideration, so this is going to be a little more involved than a catio in a non-raccoon area, but here’s the general method I used if you want to make your own feline friend a safe outdoor space. Look how happy these two are! They are able to enjoy the smells and birds, but they can’t jump off my third floor deck or get into trouble. Plus, it’s much more fun for me to be out on my deck if the cats can come with me.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/10585f96-cd4c-440f-a5c8-735bd8582c05/waterproofing+2.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Step 2: Waterproof it</image:title>
<image:caption>(if you’re in a climate that needs it) We live in Canada, so it is going to rain and snow. It’s a simple process: just get the waterproofing liquid, a tray to pour it in and a brush. Apply as per directions (mine was to put on one coat and let dry for 24 hours) and voila, waterproof catio.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/7bc1d73f-0da6-4ceb-baf8-887e1d7f53ff/putting+on+waterproofing.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Here’s the waterproofing in progress. Once you’re done, assemble the shelves as per the manufacturer.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/2b90f553-f8a3-4e11-a7da-27254f5b4de9/sawing+door+pieces.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Step 3: make the door pieces</image:title>
<image:caption>I used 3/4” x 1.5” pieces of lumber since that’s what I could find. Then, I measured how high and wide I’d want the door and cut pieces to match. You don’t necessarily need a door, you could just cover the whole catio in the hardware cloth. However, for safety, cleaning, and quick access, I would add a door.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/150b52bd-b702-4fda-9ee4-205983ae98eb/sanding+door+pieces.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Then, sand the ends.</image:title>
<image:caption>Next, I sended the ends to make sure they were smooth. I’m not a carpenter, so there’s probably a better way to attach them with proper corner joints, but since my only real concern was not letting cats out, I wasn’t as fussy about the aesthetics. I did buy small metal corner pieces to put on both the inside and outside of the corners though, just to reinforce them and keep them a little closer to square.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/47a0928e-a878-43d5-8964-1622232c6bbb/cutting+hardware+cloth.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Step 4: Attach the barrier</image:title>
<image:caption>I used steel hardware cloth since I was worried the local raccoons would bust through chicken wire.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/6414b837-03d0-429b-8619-48ae02dc10be/attaching+hardware+cloth.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio</image:title>

<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Attach it securely!</image:title>
<image:caption>Due to the raccoons, who can absolutely pull out staples, I chose to attach the hardware cloth with steel strapping and screws. If you don’t have tiny bandits in your area, staples work fine.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/e76c60e0-054e-4d71-a7fb-719fa4e609a5/making+the+door.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Step 5: Assemble the door</image:title>
<image:caption>I screwed the side pieces to the top and bottom with long screws, then added inner and outer corner reinforcement with metal corner plates. Then, I attached the hardware cloth the same way I did to the rest of the catio. Finally, I put it onto the catio with hinges and add a latch to keep it closed.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523641ffe4b0b8428993065c/0106836f-f1dc-4691-b275-905abb4d1cd2/Attaching+to+deck.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Making a catio - Step 6: Attach it to the wall or deck</image:title>
<image:caption>Since I have vinyl siding, I couldn’t use the supplied hardware to anchor the catio to the wall. So, I put brackets around the base instead. You do want to make sure it’s attached somehow so it doesn’t tip over (especially with a cat in it!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Mewsings Blog - Let’s ban declawing in Ontario! - Cats need claws!</image:title>
<image:caption>As you’ve probably noticed, I’m pretty opposed to declawing. Declawing - which is more accurately an amputation of the last joint on a cat’s paw - is still legal in Ontario and we’re the only province in Canada where that’s still true. So, I’m hoping to help the Paw Project in their efforts to get it banned here to make Canada an officially declaw free country! MPP Marit Stiles tabled legislation in 2020 that would have banned declawing. As Marit stated at the time, “Cats are our cherished companions and are often treated as members of the family, but the practice of declawing can cause lifelong pain and discomfort.” I believe that protecting our kitties is apolitical and Ms Stiles deserves our support to get this legislation back on the table.</image:caption>

<image:title>About The Cat Grooming, Behavior Consults & Training Team</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah began her life in St. Thomas, Ontario. She has always had a love of animals and at various times in her childhood, she lived with rabbits, fish and a dog. One day, Spot, an orange tabby, decided that he’d like to make the Wendling house his house. Spot was Sarah’s first cat and he showed her what a beautiful, smart, entertaining and generally demanding species he represented. She has loved them ever since. Sarah moved to Toronto to study film. After graduating, she started volunteering at the Toronto Humane Society in the kitten nursery. It was here that Sarah discovered she really liked working with animals, especially cats, and decided to make animal care her career. She started Cleopawtra Cat Services in 2005 and she also worked at veterinary clinics from 2006 to 2013.</image:caption>

<image:title>About The Cat Grooming, Behavior Consults & Training Team - Max</image:title>
<image:caption>After two years of residence living, Sarah found her own apartment and promptly adopted her first "non-family pet", Maximus Quintus Sparticus, aka Max. Sarah was also studying Classics and thought a pretentious Roman name would be just the thing for her new kitty. Max has done a smashing job of living up to it by generally being the boss and growing into the best crotchety old man. Max sadly left us on March 18, 2020, but the support, love, cuddles, and sass he gave for 20 years will never be forgotten.</image:caption>

<image:title>About The Cat Grooming, Behavior Consults & Training Team - Sophie</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah and Max were joined by Sophie several years later when Sophie was only a couple of days old. She was supposed to be a foster cat, but in the end, Sarah utterly failed at fostering and wound up giving Sophie a forever home instead. Sophie is as grateful as one could expect from a cat, which is to say she occasionally sits on Sarah’s lap and has dutifully hidden all of the household pens. She has also taken to carefully supervising all sewing activities. Sadly, Sophie left us on December 22, 2021 after a very courageous battle with cancer. We miss her floof every day.</image:caption>

<image:title>About The Cat Grooming, Behavior Consults & Training Team - Jack</image:title>
<image:caption>Captain Jack Sparrow-Harkness The Time Traveling Pirate Kitten arrived in 2012. The Toronto Cat Rescue found him on the street and brought him into the clinic Sarah was working at. He instantly decided that Sarah was going to provide him a home and Sarah is not one to argue with an adorable kitten. He came in missing his left eye, but that in no way slows him down - he has proven to be a fan of destruction, mayhem, and "not helping", but he does it with maximum adorableness. In spite of our best efforts, Jack passed away from kidney failure on December 22nd, 2022. His sweet personality and demands for snuggles are missed every day.</image:caption>

<image:title>About The Cat Grooming, Behavior Consults & Training Team - Trixie</image:title>
<image:caption>Ms. Trixie Meowtel from the Legendary House of Pancakes joined us in May 2022. Trixie is an undersocialized kitty, but she’s come a long way from when she arrived. She’s learned that daily brushing is essential to keeping her formal fur up to company standards (and that the accompanying treats are delicious). She loves taking breaks from managing our social media to play with her toys while laying in bed. We’re all thrilled Trixie has decided to trust us and has made herself right at home.</image:caption>

<image:title>About The Cat Grooming, Behavior Consults & Training Team - Jake</image:title>
<image:caption>Detective Jake Purralta has joined Cleopawtra in March 2023 to provide some much needed investigative skills. His current cases include figuring out what is under the couch, why his food bowl is empty, and why the human is asleep when it’s clearly playtime. The rescue told us that Jake had been hit by a car before they found him, but if it wasn’t for the xrays showing the pins in his hips, no one would believe it. Jake is full of energy and love and we’re thrilled he’s joined the squad. Bingpot!</image:caption>
